Free school meals for all infants

This scheme was launched following a recommendation in the School Food Plan. Today, more than 83% of children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are taking up the offer of a healthy school lunch every day.

We joined with LACA and a range of delivery partners to run a support and advice service, funded by the Department for Education, to help infant and primary schools rise to the challenge:

  • More than 9,000 schools contacted the helpline, and more than 3,400 went on to have help from some part of our support package
  • Together, we set up more than 3,000 face-to-face visits to help schools sort problems
  • We made a difference to lunchtime for an estimated 60,000 children.

We helped schools which didn’t have any meal service at all, and those who didn’t have a kitchen. Those who needed to complete funding bids quickly, and those who had to work on lunchtime logistics to get everyone fed on time without disrupting the day. Some wanted help with menus and catering for special diets, others wanted help with marketing their free meals to parents – and much, much more.

School meals the right choice

We want to see every family sticking with good school food once their children move up to Year 3. Download our leaflet to tell parents why school meals are such a good choice:
